It’s 2025 – and there are still lesbians who have never been to Lesbos? Unbelievable! This needs to change. Lesvos Air is launching a new route to the island – exclusively for lesbians! But strangely, the flights aren’t sold out. Is being a lesbian no longer a thing?

Author Joey Juschka sets out to explore this phenomenon and the lesbian island along with it. She spends a year in Greece, uncovering what life is like in Sappho’s homeland. From bare beach butts in September, too many cats in December and the big isolation in February to March porn and May panting, June cocktails and July tourists, including a straight people invasion.

Cliché! „Lesbian Island“!

It’s such a cliché: Lesbians on a lesbian island. Very lesbian, of course. And sapphic. And queer. And more!

But is it really full-on lesbian in Eressos, Lesbos, Greece? What happens when the annual festival is over? When all the lesbians are gone? What happens in winter, in spring? All year round in this little Greek village? What about Greek life in itself? How „lesbian“ is it to live in a lesbian village — called „lesbian“ because of its location, Lesbos; not because of a sexuality? How is life in Greece when the tourist season is over?

Greek Life

There’s so much more to living on Lesbos then just lesbians things. There’s community, lesbian and non-lesbian alike; there are old men in cafés (a cliché again – but also true); there are streets without adresses (but mail to deliver nonetheless); there is lots of wood to chop for winter, even more cats to feed, olive oil to collect …

Join my year month by month, and travel the island with me. Altthough I have to admit: I haven’t seen very much of it yet. There’s still way more to explore – so let’s get started, with this book.

A „Lesbian“ travel guide

„Lesbos/ Lesvos“ is a travel guide of short stories, at times also without any dykes in it, but instead with tourists who shower too much, Greeks who can’t afford swimming pools, and underwater pussies that appear in front of the world’s best bar.

You’ll learn where to find the world’s best bar, you’ll also learn (a lot!) about cats; you’ll come along to the best beaches with me (and blush at too much naked skin); we’ll have some cocktails together, but sit in ruins sipping them; we’ll go on the hunt for shoes when the winter rain hits … and also I’ll teach you some Greek!

Oh, pictures! I nearly forgot to mention them! You’ll also find plenty of pictures in the book – 90 photos telling their very own story, adding yet another dimension to the book. Pictures from all over the island, but mostly – I have to admit – from Eressos & Skala Eressos, the „lesbian paradise“.

The book contains 17 chapters in English, 17 in German, and 2 more in each language as a bonus. I’ll let you have a look into the chapter of … which month should I choose? September, when all the women arrive for the festival? December, when only a handful are left on the island? February, when the island suddenly disappears?

Oh, I’ll take March: The chapter when live on Lesbos starts up again, and juices of all kind start to flow.

March: Reputation to Lose

Winter is almost over. I notice because the library is open for more than just two hours a week again. That’s great – no more waiting for Tuesdays, 10 to 12, and then arriving at the door to find a sign: “This week open on Friday instead of Tuesday.”

Oh, libraries! What treasures I always find in them.

Right on my first visit, I pull a book off the shelf that I never want to return. Unfortunately, I’m so enthusiastic about the find that I tell the entire village and now everyone knows who’s got the book: Me.

“Here, look!” I say to a Greek friend I meet outside the library, shoving the pornographic novel in her face. “What exactly does it say in the text?”

Only after she leans over the text, I realize that not everyone likes explicit scenes as much as I do. Am I going to get strange looks, earning myself the reputation of “she-only-ever-thinks-about-sex” here on the island (as well)? Damn!

But instead, I get a translation from Greek: “Oh, Minna! If you don’t pounce on me right now, I’ll open that window and shout at the first person in the street to come upstairs!” I also get a laugh and the question: “Where did you get this?”

“Children’s section,” I say.

And before anyone can complain about what kind of people the Greeks are to keep their porn there let me clarify: It’s a cartoon. And the library is run by volunteers who are somewhat overworked (even with just two hours open per week). So, it can happen that the likes of Minna end up on the wrong shelf, next to books for first time readers.

This is what I actually meant to borrow: A book with very little text and many pictures, for learning Greek. I’ve successfully achieved that, I think, as I flip through the pages to see whether Minna can get her huge dildo into the … oh, it’s getting too graphic now. No, no, no – read it yourself! And learn Greek. Important words!

Checking out books also helps the library, although I’m not sure exactly how, as the annual fee is a measly three euros. Although, three euros multiplied by a few more users might be enough to get a few more Minnas onto the shelves. The library definitely needs support: They’ve got mostly cheesy romance novels to borrow, no brainer vacation reads, crime stories, and a dictionary.

I’ll make an addition, I think. I’ll donate one of my books!

And I actually do that, and it only takes five weeks until I discover my book “Die Welt, verbessert” (“The World, Improved”) on the shelf, neatly catalogued, ready to be borrowed.

So, should I borrow it then? I wonder immediately. Is this weird, somehow?

I’m not sure.

What I am sure about is: Besides Minna, there’s now another book in the library I can wholeheartedly recommend.

I had planned to write a thriller, taking place in Lesbos. But that didn’t happen – I had to get to know the island better first. As an author, for me „getting to know something“ means: writing about it. So I wrote, and there you have it: „Lesbos Lesvos. The Lesbian Island book“.

I wrote it in German, then found a women living in the island, who helped me translate it (she didn’t help me with the translation of this web page here – as you can probably tell by my slighlty incorrect & weird English here :-)) But rest assured: The book’s English is great! And another example of the community I found on the island.
